Pianist and composer Brad Mehldau and drummer Mark Guiliana take their electric duo, Mehliana, on a three-week tour of Canada and Europe starting with a set at the Toronto Jazz Festival this Saturday and another at the Montreal International Jazz Festival on Wednesday. Mehliana—Mehldau on Fender Rhodes and vintage synthesizers and Guiliana on drums and effects—then launches a fortnight of shows in Europe on July 5, with dates in France, Italy, Turkey, the Netherlands, Belgium, Malta, and Switzerland.

The tour follows the release of the duo’s debut album, Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, which Jazzwise calls “one of the best albums of 2014.” The album earned four stars from the Guardian and MusicOMH, which calls it “wholly absorbing ... an intuitive, compelling dialogue between the two musicians.” To pick up a copy of the album, head to iTunes or the Nonesuch Store, where CD and vinyl orders include a download of the complete album at checkout; MP3 and FLAC lossless files are available to purchase there as well.

While in Montreal in the week ahead, Meldau also plays two solo sets as part of the Festival. Following the Mehliana tour, he remains in Europe for two solo shows in Germany. In August, he heads to Brazil for a three-night residency in São Paulo with another duo partner, fellow pianist and longtime friend Kevin Hays (their album, Modern Music, was released on Nonesuch in 2011), and a solo show in Rio de Janeiro. Mehldau is back in the States in September for Nonesuch Records’ 50th anniversary festivities at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Nonesuch Records at BAM: Celebrating a Label Without Labels, performing solo and in still another duo combo, with label mate Chris Thile. Mehldau next rejoins Guiliana for a Mehliana duo performance in Washington, DC, on October 4.
