Congratulations to Catherine Zeta-Jones, winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her performance in A Little Night Music. Zeta-Jones, who made her Broadway debut as Desiree Armfeldt in this first-ever revival of the classic Stephen Sondheim / Hugh Wheeler musical last November, sang the musical's most famous song, "Send in the Clowns," during last night's awards ceremony, broadcast live from New York's Radio City Music Hall on CBS. The cast recording for A Little Night Music, also featuring Angela Lansbury and Alexander Hanson, was released by Nonesuch/PS Classics earlier this year and is available in the Nonesuch Store.
It was a banner weekend for the Welsh-born actress, who has also been named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II on the Queen's Birthday Honours list, announced Saturday. "I am absolutely thrilled with this honor," Zeta-Jones said in a statement. "As a British subject, I feel incredibly proud. At the same time, it is overwhelming and humbling."
There are just a few more days to see Zeta-Jones and Lansbury in A Little Night Music; their last performance with the cast will be this Sunday, June 20. Broadway legends Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch will join the cast when performances resume on July 13. For tickets and information, head to nightmusiconbroadway.com.

Also at the Tonys, actress Marian Seldes received a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. She is the grandmother of pianist/composer Timothy Andres, whose album debut, Shy and Mighty, was recently released on Nonesuch. Seldes is the subject of a feature article in yesterday's New York Times Magazine, for which Times writer Alex Witchel accompanies her to Andres's release-week performance of Shy and Mighty at New York's (Le) Poisson Rouge. You'll find the profile at nytimes.com.
