Giddens began a weekend of collaborative events with a concert in Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium in New York City last night with Our Native Daughters, her group with Amythyst Kiah, Leyla McCalla, and Allison Russell. It was the second of Giddens’ programs as Perspectives artist for Carnegie Hall’s 2022–23 season. Tonight, Giddens, Francesco Turrisi, and bassist Jason Sypher join the Charlotte Symphony for a one-night-only performance at the Belk Theater in Charlotte, North Carolina. And on Sunday, she takes part in a free, virtual Ojai Talk to talk with Festival Artistic and Executive Director Ara Guzelimian about the programming and collaborations to come at next year’s Ojai Music Festival, of which she is Music Director. The original cast album of Adam Guettel’s Broadway musical Days of Wine and Roses, with a book by Craig Lucas, starring Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James, is now available on CD, following its recent digital release. “Repeated listenings compound the amazement,” the New York Times says of Guettel’s work, which “has always offered that kind of challenge—initially leaving a feeling of: Beautiful, but wait, I need to hear it again—and those up for it have a way of coming away shining like Moses down from the Mount. The new score has the same effect.” Guettel, O'Hara, and d'Arcy James—all of whom have been nominated for Tony Awards for Days of Wine and Roses—will sign copies of the CD at the Drama Book Shop in NYC this Wednesday, May 22.
