Punch Brothers, who launch their North American tour in Montreal tonight, are celebrating the occasion by offering a free download of three songs recorded live at The Fillmore in San Francisco, including their songs "New York City" and "Don't Get Married Without Me" and Chris Thile's "Song for a Young Queen." The New Yorker's Alec Wilkinson, who will be chatting with the band at The New Yorker Festival on October 5, says that each band member "plays with grace, thoughtfulness, and force to a degree that is not duplicated by any band I am aware of."

Punch Brothers, who launch their North American tour at the Théâtre Corona in Montreal tonight, are celebrating the occasion by offering a bundle of tracks as a free download. The set includes three songs recorded live at The Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco on March 8, 2012, including the band's live takes on "New York City" and "Don't Get Married Without Me," off their latest Nonesuch album, Who's Feeling Young Now?, and Chris Thile's tune "Song for a Young Queen." Listen to the track previews below and head to punchbrothers.com/live to download the full songs.

Following tonight's concert in Montreal, this first leg of the North American tour, for which Punch Brothers will be joined by Tom Brosseau on most dates, also includes stops in Toronto, upstate New York, New England, the Midwest, and into the South. Punch Brothers head to Europe in late October and November and return to the States for the second leg of the North American tour starting November 24 in Vancouver. Punch Brothers close out 2012 in style with a three-night run at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City, December 29–31.

During the current tour, the band will make a special stop back home in New York City next Friday, October 5, for a short set and a chat with The New Yorker's Alec Wilkinson as part of The New Yorker Festival. Writing of "The Virtuosity and Warmth of Punch Brothers" for newyorker.com earlier this week, Wilkinson says the "engagement with their songs and instrumental pieces that the Punch Brothers display, at least for me, enlarges the boundaries of ordinary entertainment. I don’t think many popular musicians are capable of this. It requires daring, as well as a kind of humility that isn’t often native to the performer’s soul." Each band member, writes Wilkinson, "plays with grace, thoughtfulness, and force to a degree that is not duplicated by any band I am aware of." American Railroad, the new album from the Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens, is out now. It is the culmination of four years of research, collaboration, and music-making, having brought Silkroad artists all across the US to uncover and uplift stories of those who built the transcontinental railroad and connecting railways across North America. "The result is a tapestry of stories, traditions, and music that have shaped our multifaceted cultural identity, and that must be heard and recognized," Giddens says. Also out now are a performance video of the track "Mahk Jchi" and the first episode of the American Railroad podcast series. The US fall tour continues to November 23.
