The SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco has announced its 2016–17 concert season and featured among the performers taking the Miner Auditorium stage in the venue's fifth anniversary season are Pat Metheny; Brad Mehldau, joined by his Trio, Joshua Redman, and Mark Guiliana; and Emmylou Harris.

Pat Metheny launches the season with Opening Night and Opening Week concerts, presenting An Evening with Pat Metheny, September 8–11, 2016. He will be joined by drummer Antonio Sánchez, bassist Linda Oh, and pianist Gwilym Simcock. The quartet is currently on tour in Europe.

Brad Mehldau revisits his 2010 double album Highway Rider in four performances, October 6–9, 2016. As on the album, Mehldau will be joined by his Trio (bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard), label mate Joshua Redman on tenor and soprano saxophone, and a chamber orchestra led by conductor Dan Coleman. Another frequent collaborator of Mehldau's, drummer Mark Guiliana, will take part in these live shows as well. The New York Times called the album Highway Rider "his grandest effort yet." The Guardian said it's "the real deal."

Continuing the collaborative spirit, Emmylou Harris joins Rosanne Cash, one of this season's Resident Artistic Directors at SFJAZZ, and Lucinda Williams for four performances, May 18–21, 2017.

Tickets for the SFJAZZ Center's 2016–17 season go on sale to members on Saturday, June 25, and to the general public on Wednesday, July 13, both at 11 AM PT. For more information on these and other performances next season, visit sfjazz.org.

David Longstreth’s Song of the Earth, a song cycle for orchestra and voices, is due April 4. Performed by Longstreth with his band Dirty Projectors—Felicia Douglass, Maia Friedman, Olga Bell—and the Berlin-based chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, conducted by André de Ridder, the album also features Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie), Steve Lacy, Patrick Shiroishi, Anastasia Coope, Tim Bernardes, Ayoni, Portraits of Tracy, and the author David Wallace-Wells. Longstreth says that while Song of the Earth—his biggest-yet foray into the field of concert music—"is not a ‘climate change opera,’” he wanted to “find something beyond sadness: beauty spiked with damage. Acknowledgement flecked with hope, irony, humor, rage.”
