Conor Oberst, whose new album, Upside Down Mountain, was released on Nonesuch Records yesterday, performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on NBC last night. He was backed by the band Dawes, which is joining him as special guest on his current tour, to perform "Zigzagging Toward the Light," off the new album. You can watch the performance below. Tune in to another TV performance this weekend on CBS This Morning: Saturday.

"All of Mr. Oberst’s gifts align on Upside Down Mountain," writes New York Times music critic Jon Pareles in his review of the new album: "his empathy, his unassumingly natural melodies, the quavery sincerity in his voice, the plain-spoken but telling lyrics that he’s now careful to deliver clearly. His new songs are focused and aphoristic, earnestly reflecting on life without getting too precious." Read the complete review at nytimes.com.

Tune in to your local NPR member station this afternoon to hear Conor Oberst perform on World Cafe and talk with host David Dye about the new album. For more and to listen online, visit worldcafe.org.

Oberst recently stopped by Last.fm to talk about and perform a couple of songs off Upside Down Mountain—"Hundreds of Ways" and "Double Life"—and sat down for an interview about the new album, his songwriting process, having his friends in Dawes on the road with him, and more. You can watch the interview and performances here:

Conor Oberst continues to mark the release of his Nonesuch debut album with a set at Rough Trade NYC in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, tonight; tickets are available at the door. He picks up his tour with Dawes, who both open the shows and act as Oberst’s band, with stops in Philadelphia, Long Island, and Washington, DC, in the days ahead. For additional tour details, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.

To pick up a copy of Upside Down Mountain, head to Amazon, iTunes, or the Nonesuch Store, where vinyl (due around May 30) and CD orders include a download of the complete album at checkout; MP3 and FLAC lossless files are also available to purchase there.

The Way Out of Easy, the first album from guitarist Jeff Parker and his long-running ETA IVtet—saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, drummer Jay Bellerose—since their 2022 debut Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy, which Pitchfork named one of the Best Albums of the 2020s So Far, is out now on International Anthem / Nonesuch Records. Like that album, The Way Out of Easy comprises recordings from LA venue ETA, where Parker and the ensemble held a weekly residency for seven years. During that time, the ETA IVtet evolved from a band that played mostly standards into a group known for its transcendent, long-form journeys into innovative, groove-oriented improvised music. All four tracks on The Way Out of Easy come from a single night in 2023, providing an unfiltered view of the ensemble, fully in their element.

The Staves' new EP Happy New Year, out today, includes three acoustic versions of tracks from their new album, All Now—"I Don't Say It, But I Feel It," "After School," and "All Now"—and a cover of The Beatles' "She's Leaving Home." Also out now: an acoustic performance video for "After School," which the duo calls "a love song to our sister Emily inspired by the bands we were listening to in the '90s. Putting on the rose-tinted glasses and embracing nostalgia."
