Composer Patrick Zimmerli writes a hybrid of jazz and classical music. Zimmerli’s Modern Music for two pianos was premiered at Carnegie Hall in March 2011 by Brad Mehldau and Kevin Hays. Zimmerli has written two Piano Concertos, two Piano Trios, numerous solo, chamber, and vocal pieces, and over 40 pieces for his ensemble Emergence, featuring jazz saxophone, string quartet, world percussion, and electronics. He teaches at Columbia University.
Composer Patrick Zimmerli writes a hybrid of jazz and classical music. He was declared winner of the first annual CLICK People’s Commission from the Colorado Music Festival. Zimmerli’s Modern Music for two pianos was premiered at Carnegie Hall in March 2011 by Brad Mehldau and Kevin Hays.
Zimmerli has written two Piano Concertos, two Piano Trios, numerous solo, chamber, and vocal pieces, and over 40 pieces for his ensemble Emergence, featuring jazz saxophone, string quartet, world percussion, and electronics. In 2009 he completed a large-scale Chamber Symphony for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and a multimedia orchestral piece with video inspired by architecture for the Colorado College Summer Music Festival. Other commissions have come from the Ying String Quartet, the Seattle Chamber Music Festival, and the Belgian ensemble Octurn. Zimmerli has been performed at MoMA’s Summergarden series and the Guggenheim Museum, on NPR’s Fresh Sounds, and recorded on Arabesque, Blue Note, Songlines, and Koch labels. Awards include the BMI/Thelonious Monk Institute Composers’ Award, Gil Evans Fellowship and the Downbeat Jazz Awards. He teaches at Columbia University.
