    Brad Mehldau Trio kicks off a ten-day, eight-city US tour at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts in Davis, California, tonight. It's the first of three stops in the state, including Stanford and a double bill in Northridge with The Bad Plus, followed by shows in Phoenix, Durham, Philadelphia, Boston, and Albany. Mehldau's electric duo album with drummer Mark Guiliana, Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, was named to Jazzwise magazine's list of the Best Albums of the Year.

    Congratulations to Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana, whose album, Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, has won the Edison Award for Best International Jazz Album. It is the debut album from the electric duo, featuring Mehldau on Fender Rhodes and synthesizers and Guiliana on drums and effects. The Dutch awards will be presented in a gala ceremony at the Muziekgebouw Frits Philips in Eindhoven on November 27. The album has also been nominated for Best Recorded Performance in Modern Drummer's Reader's Poll.

    Chris Thile and Brad Mehldau begin a duo tour of Europe in Ludwigshafen, Germany, tonight, followed by stops in Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Austria, France, Spain, and Ireland, where the tour comes to a close at Dublin's National Concert Hall on November 9. "Strictly speaking, mandolinist Chris Thile is a bluegrass musician and pianist Brad Mehldau is a jazz musician," says the Boston Globe. "But genre categories disappeared when the two met [in concert]."

    The Brooklyn Academy of Music's wide-ranging series of concerts and events Nonesuch Records at BAM: Celebrating a Label Without Labels, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Nonesuch Records, kicks off Tuesday night with the first of three consecutive nights of concerts from Philip Glass and Steve Reich plus a separate solo set from Brad Mehldau and continues through September 28. The New York Times says the series "reflects the broad curiosity and high standard of a label that has had notable successes ... with no guiding criteria other than instinct and taste." In conjunction with these events, BAMcinématek presents Nonesuch Records on Film, a salute to the label’s rich catalogue of movie soundtracks.

    Brad Mehldau and drummer Mark Guiliana take their electric duo, Mehliana, on a three-week tour of Canada and Europe starting with a set at the Toronto Jazz Festival this Saturday and at the Montreal International Jazz Festival on Wednesday. Mehliana—Mehldau on Fender Rhodes and vintage synthesizers and Guiliana on drums and effects—then launches a fortnight of shows in Europe on July 5, with dates in France, Italy, Turkey, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland.

    In honor of the 50th anniversary of Nonesuch Records, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) presents a wide-ranging series of concerts, September 9–28. Part of the 2014 Next Wave Festival, these diverse engagements—featuring 23 evenings of music—underscore the longstanding relationship between Nonesuch artists and BAM.     Stanford Live has announced its 2014–15 season, and featured among the performers taking the stage at Bing Concert Hall are a number of artists familiar to readers of the Nonesuch Journal: Chris Thile & Edgar Meyer, Toumani Diabaté & Sidiki Diabaté, Emmylou Harris, Kronos Quartet, and Brad Mehldau Trio, as well as the world premiere of a new piece by John Adams and a celebration of the work of Stephen Sondheim.

    Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, the debut album from the electric duo of Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana, released late last month on CD and digitally, is now available on vinyl. Mehldau and Guiliana have been performing for several years, with Mehldau playing Fender Rhodes and synthesizers and Guiliana on drums and effects, as they are on the record. Mehliana comprises 12 original tunes—six written by the duo and six written by Mehldau—and was engineered and mixed by Greg Koller (Jon Brion, Kanye West). The vinyl edition includes two 140-gram LPs pressed at Pallas MFG in Diepholz, Germany, and a CD of the album.

    Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, the debut album from the electric duo of Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana, is out now on Nonesuch Records (March 18 on vinyl). The album is "astonishing," exclaims Jazzwise magazine, "one of the best albums of 2014." Mehliana earns four stars from the Guardian and from MusicOMH, which calls it "wholly absorbing ... an intuitive, compelling dialogue between the two musicians." Tune in to BBC Radio 2's Jamie Cullum tonight to hear an interview with Mehldau.     The Barbican's 2014 marathon weekend, May 17 and 18, will celebrate Nonesuch Records in the label's 50th anniversary year. Entitled Explorations: The Sound of Nonesuch Records, this curated weekend of events includes five concerts taking place in LSO St Luke's, Guildhall School's new Milton Court Concert Hall, and the Barbican Hall, with performances from Jonny Greenwood, Kronos Quartet, Brad Mehldau, Timo Andres, Sam Amidon, Natalie Merchant, Rhiannon Giddens, Olivia Chaney, and others performing works by Greenwood, Mehldau, Andres, Steve Reich, John Adams, Philip Glass, Frederic Rzewski, Henryk Górecki, Donnacha Dennehy, and more. Satellite events will include Kronos at 40 (May 13) and Jeremy Denk (May 24) with further events to be announced.

    Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, the debut album from the electric duo of Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana, is due out from Nonesuch Records on February 25, 2014. During a Mehliana show at Largo in LA last fall, the duo performed songs from the album, including "Just Call Me Nige," a video of which you can now watch here. The duo performs at the Highline Ballroom next Wednesday, January 22. Mehliana: Taming the Dragon is available to preorder on CD and vinyl (due March 18) in the Nonesuch Store with an instant download of the album track “Hungry Ghost.”
