Nonesuch Records will release the self-titled label debut from singer-songwriter Christina Courtin on June 23. The New York Times says Courtin’s voice “feels uniquely otherworldly, as if it couldn’t possibly be entirely human born.” The album is co-produced by Courtin, a graduate of The Juilliard School; jazz bassist Greg Cohen; and her frequent band mate singer/guitarist Ryan Scott. Cohen and Scott also contribute bass and guitar to the recording. Several  acclaimed musicians join them, including keyboardist Benmont Tench, drummer Jim Keltner, pedal-steel player Greg Leisz, Punch Brothers violinist Gabe Witcher, and multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion.

Christina Courtin, the New York City–based singer/songwriter/violinist, is due to make her Nonesuch album debut this year. She starts the year off with a performance in the city this Thursday night at Le Poisson Rouge, with singer/pianist/composer Gabriel Kahane opening. The New York Times says Courtin's voice "feels uniquely otherworldly, as if it couldn’t possibly be entirely human born." Time Out New York lists her among the people to watch in 2009, praising "her commanding, undulating voice" and finding in her songs "an exquisiteness that extends beyond any genre ghetto."

Tonight marks the start of New York City–based singer/songwriter Christina Courtin's December residency at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn. She'll perform tonight and each of the following two Tuesdays at the Williamsburg venue. The sets are free and begin at 9 PM. Christina was recently signed to Nonesuch Records, and her label debut is set for release some time next year.
 

Nonesuch Records is happy to announce the signing of singer/songwriter Christina Courtin, a young New York City–based musician with a classical pedigree in violin and a devoted following in New York built over the last several years playing in clubs all over town. Her label debut was recorded this year in New York and Los Angeles with a stellar cast of musicians and will be released in early 2009. Onstage, she lunges into her music with a spasmodic fearlessness that most vocalists reserve for the shower."

This past Saturday, Christina Courtin, whose Nonesuch debut is slated for next year, joined the Knights, the chamber orchestra in which she plays violin, in a concert at NYC's Washington Irving High School. The evening's program paired Beethoven's "Pastoral" Symphony with Courtin's own works. "Ms. Courtin's music and her unaffected vocal style call to mind the soulful, atmospheric sound of the late 1960s," says the New York Times review: "early Joni Mitchell at times, with an occasional touch of Laura Nyro and the vaguest hint of Janis Joplin."
