Wanda Jackson, whose new Jack White-produced album, The Party Ain't Over, in January 25, performs outside Boston tonight. The Boston Globe quotes Rosanne Cash, who described Jackson "as the prototype, the first female rock star," adding that "Jackson is still kicking out the jams." She performs at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on Friday, leading The New Yorker to note "her growly vocals, remarkable energy, and boundless good humor." De Profundis, the new album from Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica, receives five stars from Audiophile Audition. It's a program "of such sheer delight and exquisite beauty that I felt emotionally ravished when it was over," raves the reviewer. "One of the best collections of its kind that I have ever heard." The album is a Pick of the Week on WNYC's Soundcheck and CD of the Week from KBAQ, which says the music creates "a deep feeling of hope."

The Black Keys have been on a roll on their sold-out headlining US tour, which concludes this weekend. At this week's stop in Portland, The Oregonian says, "the whole show rocked." The crowd at Sunday's show in Vancouver "couldn't have asked for more," says the Vancouver Sun. "The Keys were unrelenting, sweaty and wild right from the very beginning ... Mind-blowing stuff." Following Saturday night's Seattle set, Seattle Weekly says the songs off their new album, Brothers, "were sensual and shit-kicking all at once."

Steve Reich's new album features Double Sextet and 2x5 performed by eighth blackbird and Bang on a Can, respectively. The Wall Street Journal calls Double Sextet "irresistible," saying that while Reich had "already won a place in music history ... [his] appeal to successive generations of performers is equally assured." The Philadelphia Inquirer gives the album an A, calling it "fascinating ... And yeah, it's really rocking!" Gramophone calls 2x5 "Steve Reich’s smartest, most sonically nourishing recording for years ... like an exploding diagram of the inner mechanics of a rock band playing at full tilt."

There's just over a week to go to submit entries in the contest to remix "Beyond Reason" off Philip Selway's solo debut Familial. Rolling Stone, in its album review, writes, "News flash: Radiohead officially have another songwriter." The Wall Street Journal takes a look at Selway's dual roles as Radiohead drummer and singer-songwriter and says: "The thoughtful 43-year-old has a way of making the unexpected decision seem just right ...  Selway's compositions echo elements of Radiohead, but their themes tell us they are his own."

The Ben Folds / Nick Hornby album Lonely Avenue is out today and was featured on NPR's Morning Edition. USA Today says: "Obsessive pop-music fans will fall hard." The Boston Globe calls it "musical nirvana for lovers of the deft balance of sassy snark and sincere sentiment." The New York Daily News gives the album four stars, saying "Folds' music and Hornby's words make happy, effortless lovers." The Philadelphia Daily News gives Lonely Avenue an A, calling it "a wondrous ride." The Washington Post's Express Night Out says it's "as sharp and witty as either's solo work ... yielding mini-Hornby novels re-interpreted and set to music by Folds."

The Black Keys have kicked off their sold-out headlining tour, performing the first of two consecutive shows at the Hollywood Palladium last night. LA Weekly says Dan "Auerbach's guitar grabbed the crowd by the throat and refused to let go." Pat Carney's drumming "danced nimbly about like a lion tamer lovingly controlling his beast." Together, they "tore through a set that pleased both the purists and the newcomers ... Just two men making hot, dirty blues tunes that growled and crawled up the hips of every person in that place."

The Ben Folds / Nick Hornby album Lonely Avenue is out tomorrow. "The collaboration clicks," say the Associated Press/ABC News. "There's a depth to the lyrics rare in pop songs, and they inspire top-notch work from the ever-inventive Folds." Reuters suggests one reason the partnership makes sense: "Hornby and Folds have long steered away from their usual comfort zones and explored different forms of pop culture expression." Canada's National Post calls it "an inventive success."

Tune in to The Strand on the BBC World Service tonight to hear Ben Folds and Nick Hornby discuss their forthcoming album, Lonely Avenue. The Independent gives Lonely Avenue four stars, saying it "proves to be an intelligent, sometimes amusing, sometimes moving, but always engaging collection of songs, pitched somewhere between Randy Newman and an Anglo-American Divine Comedy." The Daily Express calls it "heavenly."

Laurie Anderson gave the New York premiere of her latest stage work, Delusion, last night at BAM's Harvey Theater, the first of 12 performances there. The New York Times says Delusion shows "the degree to which Ms. Anderson’s scores bring color and shape to her productions." The Village Voice says of Anderson's voice: "As an instrument, it's just perfect: wise and bewildered, cutting and soothing, deadly serious and profoundly amusing."

Lonely Avenue, the Ben Folds / Nick Hornby album due out next week, has been described as "an affecting and intelligent record" by the BBC. Folds, whom the BBC calls "a consistently enthralling songwriter," joins Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn of Pomplamoose—recent collaborators on the VideoSong "Things You Think"—for a live online chat Wednesday evening at benfolds.com/chat, as part of the Lonely Interview series.

With just one week to go before the release of the Ben Folds / Nick Hornby collaboration Lonely Avenue, which Monocle magazine says "exceeds the sum of its parts" and has dubbed "this year's singer-songwriter classic," the project is the subject of a feature article in The Observer. The Irish Independent gives the album four stars and finds Hornby "in inspired form." The Scotsman gives it four stars as well, saying: "Two great writers, one great album of 'musical short stories.'"
