Alfred McMoore, the Akron artist who inspired Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney to choose The Black Keys as their band name, died last Friday at the age of 59. Pat's father, Jim Carney, a staff writer at the Akron Beacon Journal, has written a beautiful remembrance of the "outsider" artist he came to know as a friend. "There was no way to resist Alfred McMoore," writes Carney.

By any measure, it would seem that The Black Keys helped turn the muddied fields of New Jersey's Liberty State Park into a memorable closing day for the 2009 All Points West festival. Rolling Stone says their "primal power" of "one of America’s most respected bands" served them well. Esquire says the band's set stood out from the rest of the pack, making everything "whole again," and gives a "Daily Endorsement" to drummer Pat Carney.

Dan Auerbach performed three songs off his Nonesuch solo debut, Keep It Hid—"Trouble Weighs a Ton," "When the Night Comes," and "Goin' Home"—in his appearance on today's episode of NPR's World Café. He also spoke with the show's host, David Dye, about the new record, on which, says Dye, Dan has "expanded stylistically ... its songs conceal a melancholy and introspective side ... Driven by reverb and riffs, Auerbach's solo work sounds authentic, blunt and powerful." In other news, Justin Timberlake has made it known he's a fan of The Black Keys. "I really love their Attack and Release," he says. "I thought that was a really great record."

Pat Carney, The Black Keys drummer, has teamed up with Pulitzer Prize–winning author Art Spiegelman, for an animated short video showcasing Spiegelman's latest book, Be a Nose! Carney has created what Pitchfork calls "a mordant psych-groove instrumental" for Spiegelman's animated drawings. "Vintage-sounding breakbeats you might expect to find sampled on some lost trip-hop or abstract hip-hop record help soak up guitar fuzz, heavy bass, and droning organ."

David Byrne, Wilco, Allen Toussaint, and Toumani Diabaté (sharing the stage with Béla Fleck) will be among the scores of incredible performers at the 2009 Bonnaroo festival. This year's incarnation of the event will be held June 11–14 in Manchester, Tennessee. In other festival news, Coachella, in Indio, California, has also announced its lineup for 2009. The Black Keys are among the headliners for the festival's opening night, April 17, as are such legendary performer/songwriters as Leonard Cohen and Paul McCartney.

Since the last Nonesuch Journal entry of 2008, which laid out scores of year-end best-of lists featuring Nonesuch albums and artists, still more critical praise has come in placing this music among the year's best.

While 2008 may go down as one of the more turbulent years in recent (or distant) memory, or, more optimistically, a time of change, there is much to celebrate in the year in music. Nonesuch artists across all genres have contributed to that and, accordingly, have made their way onto many critics' lists of the year's best. For the final Nonesuch Journal article of the year, we offer an overview of just some of that year-end critical praise.

The Black Keys are getting set to head south for the summer in a two-week tour of Australia, starting December 29 just outside Perth. You can catch some of that in-concert Black Keys energy with their recently released Nonesuch DVD, Live at the Crystal Ballroom, which the Boston Herald recommends it the perfect last-minute gift suggestion and "the next-best thing to seeing this dynamic rock duo in-person," with bonus features behind the scenes "of the awesome Attack & Release."

The Grammy nominations are in, and a big congratulations goes out to the many Nonesuch artists whose work has been recognized by the Recording Academy, the organization behind the awards. Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, Ry Cooder, Emmylou Harris, Toumani Diabaté, Youssou N'Dour, Stephen Sondheim, Jonny Greenwood, and Isabel Bayrakdarian were all recognized for their recent Nonesuch releases, as were producers Danger Mouse and Judith Sherman for their work on Nonesuch albums this year.

Randy Newman, The Black Keys, The Magnetic Fields, and Punch Brothers. It's quite an eclectic list of artists, but they all share one thing, in addition to being Nonesuch label mates: they've all made the list of the Top 100 of the Year's Best CDs from NPR's All Songs Considered. The show is now looking for your input to narrow down the list to the Top 10. And speaking of year-end bests, Blender's annual Top 33 lists Randy's Harps and Angels at No. 8.

The Black Keys' US tour made its way back home to Akron, Ohio, last Saturday night to play E. J. Thomas Hall. The Cleveland Plain Dealer says the band turned the venue into "one big juke joint" for the nearly 3,000 fans. Pat and Dan, whose "music brilliantly reinvents the wheel," were treated "like conquering heroes" in this "unforgettable evening." They created "primal rock 'n' roll" that "all but demanded a visceral reaction." The band plays Akron again this Friday, at the Civic Theatre, with another group of hometown favorites, Devo, to raise funds for the Obama Presidential campaign's efforts in the all-important swing state.

The Black Keys are on the road again, with opener Jessica Lea Mayfield, who contributed harmony vocals on the Attack & Release track "Things Ain't Like They Used to Be" and recorded her own CD with the Keys' Dan Auerbach as producer. The Knoxville News describes last night's show in that city as "All you want in a rock show." The Houston Chronicle previews an upcoming show by calling the band's recordings as "progressively varied, interesting and exciting."
