The Amsterdam-based duo of Bolivian-born singer/instrumentalist Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Chicago ex-pat jazz drummer Frank Rosaly have released a remix of "BALADA PARA LA CORPORATOCRACIA," from their debut album, MESTIZX, by Andy Moor, of the Dutch anarcho-punk band The Ex. "Andy has so much experience with communal music from around the globe ... but he’s also lived the life of a musical activist, which is apparent in everything he does," Ferragutti and Rosaly say. "We didn’t think 'BALADA PARA LA CORPORATOCRACIA' could get any filthier, but he proved us wrong!" Ferragutti, Rosaly, and their band tour the US in March, with shows in Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, NYC, and Big Ears Festival in Knoxville.
The Amsterdam-based duo of Bolivian-born singer/instrumentalist Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Chicago expat jazz drummer Frank Rosaly release a new remix of "BALADA PARA LA CORPORATOCRACIA"—from their critically acclaimed, International Anthem and Nonesuch Records co-released debut album, MESTIZX—created by Andy Moor of legendary Dutch anarcho-punk band The Ex. You can hear it here and below.
Moor's remix loops Ferragutti's fiery, hexing chants that decry (what translates in English to) the "lies" and "laughs" of the capitalist colonialist machine, along with Rosaly's torrential Latin percussion / analog drum machine programming polyrhythms, and culminates in a sort of hyperspeed, heavy clave club beat with a ghostly industrial piano melody on top.
About working with Moor, Ferragutti & Rosaly say: "Andy has so much experience with communal music from around the globe, from gqom, dembow, UK grime, phonk or baile funk, but he’s also lived the life of a musical activist, which is apparent in everything he does. We’re delighted that he asked to remix one of our songs. We completely trust his musical impulses on stage, as a DJ, producer, and as a dear friend. We didn’t think 'BALADA PARA LA CORPORATOCRACIA' could get any filthier, but he proved us wrong!"
The "BALADA PARA LA CORPORATOCRACIA" remix is released just ahead of Ferragutti and Rosaly's debut US tour in March, which finds them playing shows in Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and New York, and a set at Big Ears Festival in Knoxville. See below for details and tickets, or visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.
Ferragutti and Rosaly's MESTIZX live ensemble includes Matthew Lux (Isotope 217, Iron and Wine, Exploding Star Orchestra) on bass; Ben LaMar Gay (Theaster Gates’ Black Monks of Mississippi, Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society) on cornet, vocals, and other instruments; and Ben Boye (Ty Segall, Bonnie Prince Billy) on keyboards; Ferragutti on vocals, keyboards, and other instruments; and Rosaly on drums, percussion, and other instruments.
"Sonic wonders colliding in really great ways," NPR Music says of MESTIZX. The Guardian describes it as "infectiously kinetic," while Treble calls it “an intricate, complex, and thoroughly gorgeous set of songs that weaves between folk, jazz, cumbia, bomba, art-rock and other sounds effortlessly and stunningly.” Glide dubs it "a mosaic of sound that challenges, delights, and inspires ... a pivotal debut."
