Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer bring their tour of the States to a close next Wednesday at Carnegie Hall. Nonesuch released their eponymous debut duo disc last month, along with a special deluxe edition that also includes a DVD full of concert performances and behind-the-scene footage. Audiophile Audition gives it five stars, concluding: "When you combine these two musicians, you get magic. Of course, it’s magic that explodes out of any boundaries that you might want to impose on them ... In a word, it’s wonderful."
Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer bring their month-long tour of the States to a close next Wednesday in Carnegie Hall's main hall, Stern Auditorium, after a performance at the University of Chicago tomorrow night and in Washington, DC's Lisner Auditorium on Tuesday. Nonesuch released their eponymous debut duo disc last month, along with a special deluxe edition that includes a DVD full of concert performances and behind-the-scene footage. Audiophile Audition gives the CD/DVD five stars, with the site's Hermon Joyner writing: "Both the music on the CD and DVD are performances of the highest level, and as such, they get my highest recommendation."
Joyner writes that, in the hands of these two boundary-breaking virtuosos, the unexpected pairing of mandolin and bass creates something special. He describes Meyer as "a musician that straddles the worlds of classical and vernacular music with equal aplomb," and writes of Chris: "Thile is not content to stay strictly within the confines of bluegrass. He reaches into other musical forms such as jazz, classical, rock, and free improvisation to wring out impossibly complex music and virtuosic performances, pushing the boundaries of the mandolin."
He continues:
When you combine these two musicians, you get magic. Of course, it’s magic that explodes out of any boundaries that you might want to impose on them. It's definitely not bluegrass, but it’s closer to contemporary classical music or maybe some intellectual forms of jazz. In a word, it’s wonderful.
