Joshua Redman calls Compass, his forthcoming album, "an expansion on, and an extension of, Back East," his acclaimed 2007 trio session. "And he's not wrong," says the BBC, which calls the album "a dazzling album of considerable artistry ... Compass is the sort of serious-minded album that gives jazz in 2009 a very good name." The Guardian and The Scotsman both give it four stars, with the latter calling it "an exciting and inventive disc" and "the most spontaneous-sounding of Redman's recordings." All About Jazz exclaims that the saxophonist "has produced the most singular album of his career so far," calling it Redman's "first undeniably colossal album."

Joshua Redman calls Compass, his forthcoming album of original tunes due out on Tuesday, "a further exploration of the trio format" and "an expansion on, and an extension of, Back East," his acclaimed 2007 trio session, as the new record includes multiple trio combinations with bassists Larry Grenadier and Reuben Rogers and drummers Brian Blade and Gregory Hutchinson.

"And," writes BBC's Daryl Easlea of Redman's assessment, "he's not wrong." Easlea finds on Compass "a dazzling album of considerable artistry" and says Redman, working with his "experienced supporting team ... stretches the players ever further." The musicians move from one configuration of artists to another "and back again with relative ease," says Easlea, concluding: "Compass is the sort of serious-minded album that gives jazz in 2009 a very good name." The Guardian gives the album four stars. "Redman and his partners seem to revel in spontaneous contemporary music-making rather than try to create a concept or a project," says reviewer John Fordham, "and they are some of the best-equipped players in jazz to do just that." The Scotsman gives Compass four stars as well. "It is the most spontaneous-sounding of Redman's recordings, with a disciplined but freewheeling sense of adventurous interaction," says The Scotsman's Kenny Mathieson. On the new album, Mathieson continues, Redman "sets his sights on all points of the titular compass, exploring a dazzling range of registers, idioms and moods in the course of an exciting and inventive disc. Chris May of All About Jazz exclaims that with the new album, Redman "has produced the most singular album of his career so far." On Compass, says May, "the saxophonist has cast caution and concern with form aside: a loose-limbed, wayfaring vibe permeates the music, to its great advantage."

The reviewer concludes: "An album of vigorous, passionate, improvised music built on simple tunes and unfussy arrangements, Compass is Joshua Redman's first undeniably colossal album."
