The bulk of the material is traditional but feels fresh, as if it’s being performed for the very first time, not the thousandth."

The Tribune's Aarik Danielson goes on to say: "Each member of the terrific threesome contributes to the whole in rich, meaningful ways, but Giddens’ voice proves especially revelatory time and again. The degree of skill and versatility she displays is staggering ..."

The Missourian's Vox magazine says that, with Genuine Negro Jig, "Carolina Chocolate Drops have produced a compelling album by fusing traditional string standards with modern lyricism and themes. The album remains consistently interesting with every song and demonstrates a different skill from the band’s repertoire, be it fiddle, vocals or lyricism. The album will lure you in with its toe-tapping tunes, and you’ll stay for the musical talent and complexity." Read more at voxmagazine.com.

Rhiannon Giddens spoke with NPR's Morning Edition about the area in and around the town of Swannanoa, in her home state of North Carolina, as it recovers from the devastation brought by Hurricane Helene. She also talks about an earlier tragedy in the region—a 19th-century train tunnel collapse—that inspired the old work song "Swannanoa Tunnel," which she recorded with Silkroad Ensemble. "Why were we given the ability to sing and touch people?" Giddens asks. "And this is why: when you think about the destruction, there are no words, so a song can tap into something that then releases energy—now I can cry. That's what it's for, helping us all with the emotions that are bigger than we know what to do with."
