The Carolina Chocolate Drops begin their US tour in Danville, Indiana, this Thursday, playing music from their Nonesuch debut, Genuine Negro Jig, and have now added a number of new dates, including a return to the Black Banjo Gathering, where they first met in 2005. The AP says, "The Carolina Chocolate Drops rise above easy classification ... using the blues as filtered through the unique Piedmont string band movement as a stepping stone to something more," calling Rhiannon Giddens' voice "a revelation, both modern and timeless."
The Carolina Chocolate Drops are just days away from the start of their US tour, set to begin at the Royal Theater in Danville, Indiana, this Thursday, February 25. And just today, the band has added a number of new dates across the country, including a return to the Black Banjo Gathering, the festival that first brought band members Rhiannon Giddens, Justin Robinson, and Dom Flemons together back in 2005. For all the tour dates and information, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.
The Carolina Chocolate Drops' sets will feature music from their recently released Nonesuch debut, Genuine Negro Jig, out now and available with seven exclusive bonus tracks in the Nonesuch Store. The Associated Press says that, while the trio's traditional instrumentation may connote a particular musical style, "The Carolina Chocolate Drops rise above easy classification" on the album, "using the blues as filtered through the unique Piedmont string band movement as a stepping stone to something more."
AP reviewer Chris Talbott cites the album take on "Hit 'Em Up Style" as the point at which "the album achieves liftoff velocity ... The song floats along on an energized fiddle line and Giddens' voice is a revelation, both modern and timeless."
