Mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile and guitar maven Michael Daves launch a week-long duo tour of the US West Coast, featuring music from their 2011 album Sleep with One Eye Open, with a performance at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco tonight, followed by shows in LA, Portland, and Seattle; they reunite in July for the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in upstate New York. The duo makes for "a rip-roaring partnership," says the New York Times. "Bluegrass, in their hands, gets roughed up in the best possible way, with skill and fervor, and a touch of abandon." Thile and his fellow Punch Brothers perform at a number of bluegrass festivals starting later this month.
Mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile and guitar maven Michael Daves launch a week-long duo tour of the US West Coast with a performance at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco tonight, followed by shows at Largo in Los Angeles, the Aladdin Theater in Portland, and The Crocodile in Seattle. Thile and Daves’ debut duo album, Sleep with One Eye Open, was release in 2011 on Nonesuch Records. Recorded live to tape over four days at Jack White’s Third Man studio in Nashville, the album is a collection of 16 traditional tunes by bluegrass legends like The Monroe Brothers, The Louvin Brothers, Jimmy Martin, and Flatt & Scruggs. The duo makes for "a rip-roaring partnership," says the New York Times. "Bluegrass, in their hands, gets roughed up in the best possible way, with skill and fervor, and a touch of abandon." To pick up a copy of Sleep with One Eye Open, head to the Nonesuch Store, where CD orders include a download of the complete album at checkout.
Later this month, Chris Thile rejoins his fellow Punch Brothers for a performance at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina, the first of several upcoming festival dates for the band, including Telluride, ROMP, and Wide Open bluegrass festivals.
