Mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile brings his solo tour, featuring music from his new album, Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1, back home to New York City for a sold-out performance in Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall. The concert comes in the midst of a month-long North American tour, which has already made its way from the West Coast, down South, into the Midwest, and over to the Northeast. The tour continues with stops in Philadelphia, Princeton, Toronto, and Albany before heading back into the South. Thile heads to Europe to tour in November. See below for all of the upcoming solo shows; for additional details and tickets, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.
The new album, Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1, produced by Thile’s friend, mentor, and frequent collaborator, the double bassist and composer Edgar Meyer, comprises Bach works written for solo violin.
Before the big tour launch earlier this month, Chris Thile stopped by the intimate Rockwood Music Hall in New York City to fine-tune the set for fans in what has become a favorite locale for Thile to do just that. He recently spoke with the New York Times's Steve Smith about that gig, the tour, his relationship with the music on the new album, and bringing it all to bear on tonight's show in Zankel Hall.
"I just thought, 'So you can have it all," Thile tells the Times of his reaction to hearing Glenn Gould's recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations. "You can get me moving, and be playing some of the most profoundly well-organized music that humans could possibly imagine. It’s visceral, but everything’s in its right place."
