The Independent gives the album four stars. Reviewer Andy Gill says that, following "the psychedelic greatcoat blues-rock of last year's storming" Attack & Release, from The Black Keys, with Keep It Hid, Dan "ranges across the broad sweep of blues styles," mostly "leaning in the direction of Chess Records, as reinvented via Sixties Britain," and even referencing early Fleetwood Mac. Gill concludes by crediting Dan's voice with having "the haunted quality of an authentic soul singer."

Closer to home, the Cleveland Plain Dealer gives an A- to the new record from Ohio's native son. On Keep It Hid, Plain Dealer pop music critic John Soeder finds The Black Keys' singer/guitartist "cutting loose with a marvelous solo debut." The new album has allowed Dan to "broaden his horizons," and succeeded such that Soeder can't help but conclude: "Crank it up."
