The celebrated production of David Byrne’s American Utopia will return to Broadway’s Hudson Theatre in September 2020. The current run ends today; tickets for the return engagement are on sale now. “It’s become obvious to us in the band, the crew and the producer team that audiences want—dare I say need?—to see this show," Byrne says. "They’re not ready to have it disappear just yet. We feel the same way, we love doing this show. So, it’s thrilling to us that we can announce that we’ll be back in September.” He will perform with the American Utopia Broadway musicians on Saturday Night Live on February 29.

The celebrated production of David Byrne’s American Utopia, buoyed by critical acclaim and sold-out houses, will return to Broadway’s Hudson Theatre from September 18, 2020, through January 17, 2021, with an opening date to be announced. The current run ends today, February 16, following a run of 121 performances on Broadway. Tickets for the return engagement are on sale now at amerianutopiabroadway.com.

David Byrne will perform with the American Utopia Broadway musicians on Saturday Night Live on February 29. Spike Lee has directed a filmed version of David Byrne’s American Utopia that will launched in collaboration with the Broadway hit in the fall. Byrne is joined by eleven musicians from around the globe in this “knockout theatrical concert, honoring the pleasures of music, dance, and song as collective celebration” (Hollywood Reporter). Featuring “altogether astonishing choreography by Annie-B Parson” (New York Times), with Tony-nominated Alex Timbers serving as production consultant, it’s “an artistically stunning tour de force” (Variety) brimming with “total, buoyant joy” (New York).

David Byrne’s American Utopia features David Byrne with Jacquelene Acevedo, Gustavo Di Dalva, Daniel Freedman, Chris Giarmo, Tim Keiper, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Mauro Refosco, Stéphane San Juan, Angie Swan, and Bobby Wooten III. The design team includes Rob Sinclair (lighting) and Pete Keppler (sound). Karl Mansfield and Mauro Refosco are Musical Directors.

American Utopia began as an album that David Byrne released on Nonesuch Records in March 2018. The recording was his first to reach No. 1 on the Album Chart and was also his first to reach the Top Five on the Billboard 200 chart. The theatrical concert, which includes songs from American Utopia along with songs from Talking Heads and his solo career, played more than 150 dates in 27 countries over nine months in 2018, and was named “Best International Contemporary Concert” at Australia’s 2019 Helpmann Awards.

    Composer Steve Reich talks about creating his 1970–71 piece Drumming—which the Village Voice hailed as “the most important work of the whole minimalist music movement"—in a new video from his publisher Boosey & Hawkes. Steve Reich and Musicians gave the world premiere performance of Drumming at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC in December 1971. Their 1987 Nonesuch recording is included in the forthcoming Steve Reich Collected Works, a twenty-seven disc box set, due March 14.
