Mala was released to critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, with Pitchfork calling it "Banhart's best record in nearly a decade." The album received four-star reviews from, among others, Mojo, Q, the Times of London, and the Guardian, which called it a "triumph." Under the Radar concludes: "He's a singularly idiosyncratic and brilliant songwriter, one hitting an arresting stride on this uniformly superb album."
