Dr. John—Mac Rebennack—whose new album, Locked Down, will be released on Nonesuch April 3, launches a week-long tour of East Asia with two sets at Billboard Live in Osaka, Japan, tonight. It's the first of two consecutive nights for Dr. John and his band The Lower 911 at the venue, which will be followed by a three-night, six-set run at Billboard Live in Tokyo and two nights at the HK Cultural Centre Concert Hall in Hong Kong for the Hong Kong Arts Festival.
Locked Down, Dr. John's first album for Nonesuch Records, is a startling album that marks a significant departure from his recent efforts. Produced by The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, the new album is an entirely new approach for the iconic Dr. John, featuring as it does his collaboration with Auerbach and a band of young musicians Auerbach hand-picked to make Locked Down at his Nashville studio. The CD is due out April 3; the vinyl follows on April 21. Both are available to pre-order in the Nonesuch Store now; pre-orders include an exclusive print of Dr. John and Auerbach and high-quality, 320 kbps MP3s of the album on release day.
Dr. John will lead a three-weekend residency titled Dr. John: Insides Out at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in Brooklyn, New York, starting March 29. The centerpiece of the residency is a three-night run of concerts in which Auerbach will join Dr. John and a handpicked band to premiere new music from the album at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, April 5–7. Insides Out begins the previous weekend, March 29–31, with a tribute to Louis Armstrong featuring Rickie Lee Jones, Arturo Sandoval, and others, and concludes April 12–15 with Funky But It’s Nu Awlins, a funk-infused night of New Orleans music, featuring Irma Thomas, Ivan Neville, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and other key players from Dr. John's hometown.
