Steve Reich is set to join famed German electronic-music pioneers Kraftwerk as the special guest in a sold-out show marking the Opening Night of the 2009 Manchester International Festival at the Velodrome in Manchester, England, on July 2. The concert, titled Returns Only, will feature the world premiere of Reich’s 2x5, in addition to a full set by Kraftwerk of their own work. The new Reich piece, 2x5, was commissioned by the Festival and will be directed by the composer and performed by Bang on a Can.

Although the concert is sold out, the Festival has teamed up with Boosey & Hawkes, Steve Reich's publisher, for a unique opportunity to win a pair of tickets for prime seats to the event, along with two backstage passes to meet the composer. What's more, the Radisson Edwardian in Manchester has added two free nights' accommodation, July 2-3, along with one fine dinner for two at the The Market Restaurant. Transportation is not provided.

The contest begins today and will be held through the Steve Reich Twitter feed run and updated by Boosey. On each of 2 days this week, there will be 5 questions or prompts sent from @SteveReich on Twitter. (That's 2x5, for a total of 10 tweets.)  Follow @SteveReich on Twitter and answer each the 10 prompts there. Each of the 10 responses must include the hash tag #boosey and must be received by 11:59 pm EDT on Friday, June 12. The contest winner will be selected and notified via Twitter.

American Railroad, the new album from the Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens, is out now. It is the culmination of four years of research, collaboration, and music-making, having brought Silkroad artists all across the US to uncover and uplift stories of those who built the transcontinental railroad and connecting railways across North America. "The result is a tapestry of stories, traditions, and music that have shaped our multifaceted cultural identity, and that must be heard and recognized," Giddens says. Also out now are a performance video of the track "Mahk Jchi" and the first episode of the American Railroad podcast series. The US fall tour continues to November 23.
