Kronos Quartet performed Terry Riley's Sun Rings at Stanford University last Friday in what the Financial Times calls an "expectedly inspirational" performance from the group, and through which the composer's "artful artlessness attains rare (and celestial) states of feeling."
Allan Ulrich, reviewing the concert for the Financial Times, writes:
For three decades, the San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet has served the cause of contemporary music in ways both wondrous and unpredictable. The group is also insatiable. Almost none of its innumerable commissions lingers long enough in the active repertoire to be called a classic. But Terry Riley’s full-evening multimedia Sun Rings, premiered in 2002 and periodically restored with enormous réclame, is a glorious exception.
