Black_keys_attack_and_release_lgThe Black Keys unleashed a number of new songs off Attack & Release, their forthcoming Danger Mouse-produced Nonesuch album, at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, late (late) last night. They played a 1 AM set at Emo's Main Room, and the Hartford Courant's rock critic, Eric R. Danton, was there. He reports:

There's no doubt ... that the Akron, Ohio, garage-blues duo has freshened up their sound. Guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Pat Carney still play visceral blues-soaked rock, but they've added a hard-rock edge with monstrous, catchy riffs and, on one song, organ [with] Auerbach ... grinding out chords without losing any of the grit of the band's lo-fi guitar-based records.
