Mandolinist Chris Thile helped kick off the 2008 Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, Scotland, on Wednesday as a special guest in the special opening-night concert, "Common Grounds," for what the Scotland Herald called a highlight of the multi-artist event. Chris then joined his band, Punch Brothers, for a "short cameo," another highlight of the evening, and a sample of their own show tonight. Between their Celtic Connections appearances, the band made a quick stop in Dublin for an surprise gig at the Lord Edward ("Dublin's Oldest Seafood Restaurant and Tavern"), reports the editor of Bluegrass Ireland, Richard Hawkins. He's posted pics of Chris and the guys from an interview and recording session the band made for RTE Radio, Ireland's national broadcaster, at the home of producer/engineer Aidan Butler. Niall Toner, presenter of the show Roots Freeway and a mandolinist in his own right, reports that the session will be broadcast on an as-yet-unscheduled episode of RTE Radio One's Nashville Sessions.
Punch Brothers debut recording, Punch, will be available next month from Nonesuch Records.
