James Farm, the collaborative band featuring Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks, Matt Penman, and Eric Harland, is the subject of a feature article in Spinner, which spoke with Harland and Parks about the project and their new album. "Yes, many will call James Farm an all-star band," says Spinner. "[T]he band certainly has some of the leading lights of today's jazz scene. But to hear Harland and Parks speak about the band's origins, James Farm seems something organically grown rather than a self-conscious assembly of heavy hitters."
James Farm, the collaborative band featuring saxophonist Joshua Redman, pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland, whose self-titled debut album was released last week on Nonesuch, is the subject of a feature article in Spinner, whose Tad Hendrickson spoke with Harland and Parks for the piece. "Yes, many will call James Farm an all-star band," writes Hendrickson. "[T]he band certainly has some of the leading lights of today's jazz scene. But to hear Harland and Parks speak about the band's origins, James Farm seems something organically grown rather than a self-conscious assembly of heavy hitters."
"We're just a bunch of guys who like making music together," Parks tells Spinner.
"This group has a leg up on other bands because of the time its members have spent on the bandstand playing together in various combinations," Hendrickson concludes. "But chemistry is a tricky thing and nothing is a given until it happens. Now it's happened and the record is out. Next up comes phase two—watching the band evolve as it puts tours under its collective belt."
