Jessica Lea Mayfield has been named New Band of the Day by the Guardian. Mayfield "deftly moves between country, folk and soul on Tell Me," her forthcoming Nonesuch debut, "but there's more to her than zealously guarding antique genres," says the Guardian. Jessica Lea Mayfield has been named New Band of the Day by the Guardian. The Guardian's Paul Lester traces back through the young artist's career, including her contribution of guest vocals on The Black Keys' 2008 album Attack & Release and her debut record, With Blasphemy So Heartfelt, which the Keys' Dan Auerbach produced, as he has her forthcoming Nonesuch debut album, Tell Me, due out February 8.
"Imagine a Stateside Laura Marling, a cool Taylor Swift, or a young Lucinda Williams," Lester suggests. Mayfield "deftly moves between country, folk and soul on Tell Me, but there's more to her than zealously guarding antique genres. There are quirky rhythms here, and throughout Auerbach employs ambient textures and atmospheric FX, the sort of studio finessing that nods to eccentric producers."

Also in the UK, Mayfield is featured in the new issue of Uncut magazine, out now, in its preview of “hot” 2011 album releases. (Also included are the forthcoming albums from Wanda Jackson and The Low Anthem.) "Jessica Lea Mayfield’s Tell Me announces the arrival of a major talent," says the magazine, "her voice combining the country grit of Lucinda Williams with the dreamier drift of Hope Sandoval."
