Jonny Greenwood's orchestral piece Doghouse, featuring music used in his Norwegian Wood film score, received its US premiere in concerts with works by Philip Glass and György Ligeti at the NY Society for Ethical Culture last weekend. The concert is now available online at npr.org. "As with so much of Glass' output, there's something innately cinematic about Greenhouse's work," says NPR, "as well as a regal self-containment that evokes his hero Ligeti and is matched with a thrillingly dark tension." NPR calls it a concert "rich with ideas and emotions." The New York Times calls Doghouse "consistently involving."
Jonny Greenwood's orchestral piece Doghouse, featuring music used in his Norwegian Wood film score, received its US premiere in performances by Ensemble Signal with the Wordless Music Orchestra and conductor Brad Lubman at the New York Society for Ethical Culture last Friday and Saturday nights. New York Times music critic Allan Kozinn, in his concert review, says "the qualities that make the nearly 30-minute piece so consistently involving are its insistent drive and Mr. Greenwood’s intuitive use of dissonance and resolution."
The concerts, part of the Wordless Music series, also include the first New York City performances of Philip Glass's Symphony No. 4 ("Heroes," based on the music of David Bowie and Brian Eno) and György Ligeti's Chamber Concerto. The first concert was webcast live on Q2, WQXR's 24-hour new-music stream, and is now available to hear again online from NPR Music at npr.org.
"As with so much of Glass' output, there's something innately cinematic about Greenhouse's work, as well as a regal self-containment that evokes his hero Ligeti and is matched with a thrillingly dark tension," writes NPR's Anastasia Tsioulcas.
"The Society for Ethical Culture is only an occasional concert venue," Tsioulcas continues, "but I can't help but be struck by the words suspended over the stage: 'The place where people seek to meet the highest is holy ground.' Perhaps that sentiment's a little too earnest for jaded downtown musicians, but what a perfect idea to serve as the backdrop for a concert so rich with ideas and emotions."
