Congratulations to Jonny Greenwood, whose score for Paul Thomas Anderson's new feature film, Phantom Thread, has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score. This is Greenwood's first Academy Award nomination. The film has also received Oscar nominations for Best Picture; Best Director, Paul Thomas Anderson; Best Actor in a Leading Role, Daniel Day-Lewis; Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Lesley Manville; and Best Costume Design, Mark Bridges.
The film's soundtrack—now available digitally via Nonesuch Records, with the CD to follow February 9 and the vinyl LP April 21—includes eighteen compositions by Greenwood. It was recorded in London with a sixty-member string orchestra conducted by Robert Ziegler and is featured more prominently in the film than any of Greenwood's scores have been before. The Phantom Thread score is up for a BAFTA and was nominated for a Golden Globe; it has received the Best Score prizes from film critics' associations in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle, and St. Louis.
Anderson and Greenwood's previous collaborations include the soundtrack for There Will Be Blood (2007), The Master (2012), and Inherent Vice (2014), all released by Nonesuch. Anderson also documented the recording of the Nonesuch release Junun, a collaboration between Greenwood, composer/musician Shye Ben Tzur, and a group of Indian musicians called the Rajasthan Express, in a film of the same name.
The Academy Awards ceremony will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on ABC on "Oscar Sunday," March 4, starting at 8pm ET, and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. For additional details and the complete list of nominees, visit oscar.go.com.
