The Joshua Redman Trio, featuring bassist Matt Penman, a member with Redman of the band James Farm, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, kick off a week’s residency at the Village Vanguard in New York City tonight. "Joshua Redman has lately put his tenor and soprano saxophone to work in the context of James Farm, a superarticulate postbop quartet, with strong direction from all four of its members," says the New York Times. "He returns to a more ostensibly hierarchical trio format here ... The results should be sleek and full of silvery digression." James Farm has a four-night run at the Blue Note in Tokyo next month. Redman and Brad Mehldau conclude their own duo tour next week.
The Joshua Redman Trio, featuring bassist Matt Penman, a member with Redman of the band James Farm, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, kick off a week’s residency at the Village Vanguard in New York City tonight, with multiple sets to follow each night through Sunday, April 22. The New York Times recommends the shows. "Joshua Redman has lately put his tenor and soprano saxophone to work in the context of James Farm, a superarticulate postbop quartet, with strong direction from all four of its members," writes Times music critic Nate Chinen. "He returns to a more ostensibly hierarchical trio format here ... The results should be sleek and full of silvery digression."
New York Daily News writer Greg Thomas spoke with Redman about the residency, Redman's first time headlining the venue since 2008. "Jazz is like a blue chip stock, with consistent creativity in times good and bad, a long-term value that rewards with dividends of satisfaction," writes Thomas. "The truth of this metaphor is clearly evident in the artistry of Joshua Redman, rightfully acclaimed as one of the best saxophonists to arrive on the jazz scene in the last 20 years." Redman, Penman and the rest of James Farm—pianist Aaron Parks and drummer Eric Harland—which released its self-titled debut album on Nonesuch last year, reunite next month for a four-night run at the Blue Note in Tokyo. Before then, Redman plays the final two shows in his duo tour with label mate Brad Mehldau, at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, New Jersey, and the Berklee Performance Center in Boston, next week.
The Berklee Performance Center played host to James Farm last fall for the BeanTown Jazz Festival. The performance was broadcast on the latest episode of NPR's JazzSet with host DeeDee Bridgewater, which you can hear at npr.org.
