USA Today's Elysa Gardner says the new album "nods to lang's alt-country roots while reinforcing her reputation as a singer of genre-defying dexterity and beauty." The Toronto Sunsays the album "marries rich countripolitan sophistication to earthy Memphis soul to create lang's warmest and most welcoming work in many a year." In a four-star review, the New York Daily News called Sing it Loud "a culmination, threading some of lang's old fire through her current calm" and noted that album opener "I Confess" "sounds strikingly like something ripped from Roy Orbison's back pages, a pop aria rippling with echo, bolero drums and a vocal that ricochets around the speakers." Check out the video for "I Confess," directed by Aaron Brown, here, via the k.d. lang YouTube channel:
Released in Australia last week, Sing it Loud was named "Album of the Week" by Sydney's Daily Telegraph, which hailed it as "back-to-basics lang recorded as a band, mostly in one take, just like the old days: raw and immediate." The West Australian called it a "damn near perfect album ... One of the best just got better." Sing it Loud is lang's first studio album since 2008's Watershed, which debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200, and her first record made entirely with a band of her own since her early albums with the Reclines. She and the Siss Boom Bang-comprising Joe Pisapia (a multi-instrumentalist who co-produced the album with lang and serves as musical director), Daniel Clarke (keyboards), Fred Eltringham (drums/percussion), Joshua Grange (baritone guitar, dobro), and Lex Price (bass)-recorded it at Pisapia's Middletree Studios in Nashville and the chemistry between them was instantaneous.
"The second the band walked in, the energy was palpable," lang recalls. "Sing it Loud is actually probably the pinnacle of my creative life because it happened so fast, so naturally, and with so much joy."
lang and the Siss Boom Bang will play the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, CA on May 1 and kick off an extensive North American tour in June, following a UK tour; lang and the band return to Australia to tour in November. David Longstreth’s Song of the Earth, a song cycle for orchestra and voices, is due April 4. Performed by Longstreth with his band Dirty Projectors—Felicia Douglass, Maia Friedman, Olga Bell—and the Berlin-based chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, conducted by André de Ridder, the album also features Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie), Steve Lacy, Patrick Shiroishi, Anastasia Coope, Tim Bernardes, Ayoni, Portraits of Tracy, and the author David Wallace-Wells. Longstreth says that while Song of the Earth—his biggest-yet foray into the field of concert music—"is not a ‘climate change opera,’” he wanted to “find something beyond sadness: beauty spiked with damage. Acknowledgement flecked with hope, irony, humor, rage.”
Composer Steve Reich talks about creating his 1970–71 piece Drumming—which the Village Voice hailed as “the most important work of the whole minimalist music movement"—in a new video from his publisher Boosey & Hawkes. Steve Reich and Musicians gave the world premiere performance of Drumming at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC in December 1971. Their 1987 Nonesuch recording is included in the forthcoming Steve Reich Collected Works, a twenty-seven disc box set, due March 14.
