Kronos Performing Arts Association (KPAA) has announced the ten composers—five women and five men—who will be participating in Year Two of Kronos Quartet's Fifty for the Future project in the 2016/17 concert season, including Laurie Anderson and Philip Glass. They join the Year One artists, like Nonesuch label mate Rhiannon Giddens, in creating new works, which Kronos will then premiere around the world. In addition, KPAA will provide companion materials for each piece, including scores, parts, recordings, videos, performance notes, and composer interviews, all of which will be distributed online and made available at no charge.
"The composers are enthusiastic about this idea, about contributing to something that will lead young players toward the music of the future," says Kronos Quartet Founder and Artistic Director David Harrington. "What the composers I’ve spoken to all have in common is that they have all agreed to make one spoke in this wheel. With careful work, I am confident we will end up with magical entry points for players to enter the world of string quartet ensemble music for the 21st century."
In addition to Anderson and Glass, the Year Two composers include Raven Chacon (Navajo Nation/USA), Guillermo Galindo (Mexico/USA), Aleksander Kościów (Poland), Nicole Lizée (Canada), Anna Meredith (United Kingdom), Kala Ramnath (India/USA), Karin Rehnqvist (Sweden), and Trey Spruance (USA).
Kronos has also welcomed additional presents to its list of Fifty for the Future Legacy Partners (Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA; The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College, SUNY; and Texas Performing Arts Association at the University of Texas at Austin) and Commissioning Partners (21st-Century Musician Initiative, DePauw University; Esterhazy Foundation; Toronto Symphony Orchestra; Vancouver Symphony Orchestra). Kronos’ Fifty for the Future is also made possible by support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, and several generous individuals.
