Kronos_cusp_of_magic_lgKronos Quartet will bring Terry Riley's Sun Rings to nearby Stanford University on January 18 in the first of five upcoming performances of the piece. The work was commissioned for Kronos by NASA, among others, and premiered by the group in 2002. The Quartet's forthcoming Nonesuch release, due out on February 5  (and pictured at right), features Riley's The Cusp of Magic.

Next week's performance at Stanford has made the Boing Boing Directory of Wonderful Things and prompts Underwire, the Wired magazine blog, to wonder what happens when "the sounds of space collide with a string quartet." The answer: the "far-out multimedia production" that is Sun Rings. Writes Underwire's Asami Novak, "Deep-space lightning, crackling solar winds, and other cosmic events harmonize with Riley’s music, along with the visual aids of Willie Williams."
