On the LA Times film blog Extended Play, Todd Martens reports from a screening earlier this week of Paul Thomas Anderson's new film, There Will Be Blood. The director was in attendance and spoke afterwards about the film, which is set for release December 26; the soundtrack will be out on Nonesuch December 18. Martens hopes that the "fascinating," "startling" score by Jonny Greenwood gets through to Oscar voters "for the original score nomination it deserves."
After having previously cited The Shining as an inspiration for the film and its score, the director offered another at this week's screening: John Huston's The Treasure of Sierra Madre. Martens reports that, while working on There Will Be Blood, Anderson sent Greenwood parts of Max Steiner's Sierra Madre score. "While the music of the latter took a more majestic approach," Martens writes, "Greenwood is able to grace There Will Be Blood with a similarly epic sonic scope."
