Lake Street Dive's Nonesuch Records debut album, Side Pony, produced by recent Grammy winner Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell), is out now. To pick up a copy, head to your local record store, iTunes, Amazon, or the Nonesuch Store, where CD and vinyl orders include a download of the complete album at checkout, and the 96kHz/24bit HD digital album is also available to purchase.
The four band members—drummer Michael Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney, singer Rachael Price, and guitarist/trumpeter Michael "McDuck" Olson—celebrate the release as guests on NPR's World Cafe today. The band will also lead a Q&A on their Twitter account today at 1 PM ET, using the hashtag #SidePonyQandA. Lake Street Dive begins a US tour next week in Phoenix, and, with many of the dates having sold out, new shows have just been added, including an appearance at Radio City Music Hall. Tickets for the new dates go on sale today. See below for all of the currently announced shows; for all the latest, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.
Side Pony has already been met with critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. "A band steeped in Motown Soul, Beatles melodies, and pop divas from Dusty Springfield to Adele," says Rolling Stone, "the retro vibe rules, vividly captured by producer Dave Cobb … pretty irresistible."
"Side Pony is a confident, expertly played statement from a band that’s been honing its approach for more than a decade," says the Boston Globe, "and it clearly shows that Lake Street Dive is ready to make itself known to whatever audiences have yet to succumb to its many charms." That review follows a recent article in the Globe that declared: "Another year, another auspicious marker on the timeline of Lake Street Dive's nascent world domination."
"This band is going to own the universe this year," says Glamour. "They have beautiful harmonies, clever songwriting."
"Lake Street Dive is a blue-eyed soul quartet whose pop stylings are informed by jazz and indie pop," says San Diego Reader, "and this year's Side Pony sides are the band's best yet."
The Daily Beast says: "Their catchy melodies and appealing funk stylings are ready for prime time. I have a hunch that … Side Pony, could take them to the next level," and Paste concurs, saying, "The unexpected chord provides a different kind of pleasure, one that's been hard to find lately. That's why Lake Street Dive is so important."
In Ireland, Side Pony is RTÉ Radio 1 Album of the Week. In the UK, the Sun gives it a perfect five stars, calling it "a classy record which is carried joyously along by an excellent singer."
Side Pony takes its name from a song on the record that refers to a whimsical hairstyle, but it also serves as a metaphor for Lake Street Dive's philosophy and personality as a band. As Kearney puts it, "When we were settling on the album title, that one just stuck out to us as embodying the band's spirit. We've always been this somewhat uncategorizable, weird, outlying, genre-less band. That's the statement we wanted to make with this record: be yourself."
