Laurie Anderson is at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams, Massachusetts, this weekend as part of a weeklong residency to develop her new work, Delusion. On Saturday afternoon, she will be at MASS MoCA's Hunter Center to speak about her creative process and discuss the piece, which will premiere on February 16 and run for a week at the Vancouver Playhouse as part of that city's Cultural Olympiad.
Conceived as a series of short mystery plays, Delusion moves between the everyday and the mythic, combining violin, electronic puppetry, music, and visuals. Employing a series of altered voices and imaginary guests, Anderson tells a complex story about longing, memory, and identity. At the heart of Delusion is the pleasure of language and a terror that the world is made entirely of words.
In the past, Anderson has used MASS MoCA to perfect some of her experimental work. This weekend's showing is part of MASS MoCA’s MASS Manufacturing series—artist residencies that provide performing artists, theatrical innovators, dancers, visual artists, and musicians the opportunity to develop and explore new works. Each MASS Manufacturing residency culminates in a public work-in-progress showing.
