Laurie Anderson will be honored at Legends 2011, a scholarship benefit from Pratt Institute in New York City. Anderson will be introduced and presented her award by author Salman Rushdie in a ceremony held at 7 World Trade Center in Manhattan on Tuesday, November 1, at which she will give a special performance. Also receiving the award are interior designer, furniture designer, and artist Juan Montoya and artist, filmmaker, and photographer William Wegman.

"The Legends 2011 scholarship benefit will provide hundreds of talented students the opportunity to pursue and achieve a Pratt education," said Pratt President Thomas F. Schutte, a host of the event. "It is my privilege to honor Laurie Anderson, Juan Montoya, and William Wegman as this year's Pratt Legends. It gives me great pleasure to welcome these icons in music, design, and art into Pratt's diverse community and to present them with 2011 Legends awards at this year's scholarship benefit."

The Legends Awards were conceived in 1999 by the Pratt Institute's Board of Trustees to celebrate distinguished individuals and companies in the world of art and design, whose accomplishments and values resonate with those of Pratt Institute. The event's mission is to raise funds to provide financial aid to Pratt students based on need and merit. Eighty percent of Pratt's students require financial aid to pursue their educations. Every dollar raised through Legends strengthens the student body by increasing the scholarship endowment-allowing the most qualified students an opportunity to attend one of the world's foremost schools of art, design, and architecture, regardless of their financial background.

Among past Legends Awards recipients are Dale Chihuly, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Tommy Hilfiger, Al Hirschfeld, Marc Jacobs, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Meier, Takashi Murakami, Julian Schnabel, Patti Smith, Bruce Weber, Robert Wilson, and others.

David Longstreth’s Song of the Earth, a song cycle for orchestra and voices, is due April 4. Performed by Longstreth with his band Dirty Projectors—Felicia Douglass, Maia Friedman, Olga Bell—and the Berlin-based chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, conducted by André de Ridder, the album also features Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie), Steve Lacy, Patrick Shiroishi, Anastasia Coope, Tim Bernardes, Ayoni, Portraits of Tracy, and the author David Wallace-Wells. Longstreth says that while Song of the Earth—his biggest-yet foray into the field of concert music—"is not a ‘climate change opera,’” he wanted to “find something beyond sadness: beauty spiked with damage. Acknowledgement flecked with hope, irony, humor, rage.”
