Mandy Patinkin was on NPR's All Things Considered last week to talk with host Ari Shapiro about his new album, Children and Art, released this fall on Nonesuch, and what is ahead for him now that Showtime's Homeland, in which he stars as Saul Berenson, is approaching its final season. You can hear their conversation below.
"Art, never more than these moments we're living these days, is the avenue toward expression of existence," Patinkin says. "The whole system is falling apart, and you need to turn to the fire department to put out the flames. And in this case, I appeal to artists of every nature to guide us and lead us back to humanity and caring for our fellow human beings and doing what is morally and ethically appropriate, and not forgetting what my grandpa Max used to say in Yiddish ... 'the wheel is always turning.' So if you're on top, know that one day you'll be on the bottom. And if somebody is knocking on your door, open it and welcome them, or no one will be there when you need help."
On Children and Art, Patinkin performs songs by Randy Newman, Laurie Anderson, Lyle Lovett, Taylor Mac, Stephen Sondheim, Tom Waits, Rufus Wainwright, Taylor Mac, Teitur, and Patinkin himself. To pick up a copy, head to your local music shop or the Nonesuch Store, where CD orders include a download of the complete album at checkout; the album is also available on Amazon and iTunes and can be heard at Apple Music and Spotify.
Mandy Patinkin's tour, for which he is joined by pianist Adam Ben-David, comes to Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, New York, this weekend, then heads back to Washington State for two shows in Yakima next week. The tour continues through February. For details and tickets, see below and visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.
