"Shiver," a one-off collaboration between Sam Amidon and San Fermin that was conceived in the midst of their winter 2015 tour, premiered via NPR Music earlier today. You can hear it below. The song will be released digitally April 8, 2016.

"'Shiver' was born while we were on tour together in the chilly Northeast and Midwest this past December," San Fermin's Ellis Ludwig-Leone explained its creation to NPR Music. "It started with an iPhone recording of Sam's five year-old son Arthur banging on some drums at the venue in Providence, which I turned into a beat. Sam wrote a banjo line and played a violin solo over that, which we recorded on stage in the minutes before doors opened at our show in Columbus. Once the tour was over, I set the Simic poem (Sam’s idea), Allen laid down vocals, and some of the band members came in to flesh things out. Sam sent over his vocal track from London and that was that."

As noted earlier today in the Nonesuch Journal, Sam Amidon performs at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, this weekend, performing with composer/pianist Nico Muhly and violist Nadia Sirota and as part of Thomas Bartlett (a.k.a. Doveman 's project The Burgundy Stain, both on Saturday. He then heads to Switzerland for a set on the Stanser Musikstage and will take part in Justin Vernon's Eaux Claires Festival in Wisconsin, where The Staves will also be playing, this summer. Congratulations to composer and pianist Timo Andres on receiving the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's Elise L. Stoeger Prize—a $25,000 cash prize, awarded biennially by CMS to recognize significant contributions to the field of chamber music composition. Andres says: “I feel equally challenged and freed to take risks when I write chamber music, and writing it, I’ve learned the most about becoming a better composer and musician. To be recognized in this medium by one of its greatest institutional standard-bearers is a huge and unexpected honor.”

David Longstreth’s Song of the Earth, a song cycle for orchestra and voices, is due April 4. Performed by Longstreth with his band Dirty Projectors—Felicia Douglass, Maia Friedman, Olga Bell—and the Berlin-based chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, conducted by André de Ridder, the album also features Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie), Steve Lacy, Patrick Shiroishi, Anastasia Coope, Tim Bernardes, Ayoni, Portraits of Tracy, and the author David Wallace-Wells. Longstreth says that while Song of the Earth—his biggest-yet foray into the field of concert music—"is not a ‘climate change opera,’” he wanted to “find something beyond sadness: beauty spiked with damage. Acknowledgement flecked with hope, irony, humor, rage.”
