Natalie Merchant brought her tour of the UK and Ireland to a close last night at The Helix in Dublin. It was preceded on the tour by a Sunday night set at the Brighton Dome, to which the Independent gives four stars, calling Merchant "a solo artist of rare maturity and depth" who brought "a sparkle to the proceedings."
In the concert review, the Independent's Fiona Sturges describes Merchant's recently released Nonesuch debut album, Leave Your Sleep, as "a hugely ambitious and beautifully realised double album comprising children's poems and nursery rhymes set to a dizzying range of musical styles, from Dixieland, big band and Cajun to Balkan folk and kletzmer."
In the pared-down setting of the live concert performance, Merchant's voice was center stage, bringing "extraordinary pathos" to the poetry she set to music on these songs. "Thirty years into her career," Sturges concludes, "this is Merchant at her most vital."
