Buena Vista Social Club at Carnegie Hall, the recent release capturing that famous 1998 concert, receives five stars from the New Zealand Herald, which calls it "just as powerful as the 1997 studio album that made the Cuban players world-wide stars." The passing, since that show, of a number of the key band members "makes the beautifully packaged double album even more special," states the review, and "it's the closest you're going to get" to 1940s Havana. "Transport yourself."
"It may be more than a decade since the Buena Vista Social Club's concert at New York's Carnegie Hall," says the New Zealand Herald in its five-star review of the recently released recording of the concert, "but this live recording is just as powerful as the 1997 studio album that made the Cuban players world-wide stars."
What's more, says reviewer Scott Kara, the passing, since that show, of a number of the key band members—Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, and Compay Segundo—"makes the beautifully packaged double album even more special."
Kara points to a number of highlights on the recording, from "the catchy and popular" album opener, "Chan Chan," to the "understated beauty" of the group's title track. Finally, he concludes, "It may not be quite like being there on the night, nor like being in old Havana in the roaring 40s, but it's the closest you're going to get. Transport yourself."
