Kronos Quartet concludes its week-long residency at the Barbican in London with a concert titled Early Music at Wilton's Music Hall tonight. Featured on the program are the Philip Glass arrangement of Bob Dylan's "Don’t Think Twice Ma, It's All Right," which Kronos performs on Chimes of Freedom, the newly released Amnesty International collection of artists performing Dylan, and the world premiere of Valentin Silvestrov's String Quartet No. 3. This is the third Kronos concert in London this week, following last night's concert at the Barbican and Tuesday's show at Hackney Empire, which received four-star reviews from the Financial Times and the Independent, the latter calling it "a revelatory evening."
With the conclusion of the Barbican residency, Kronos Quartet returns to the States just in time for a celebration of Philip Glass's 75th birthday at (Le) Poisson Rouge in New York City on Sunday. Additional special guests for the event include Dennis Russell Davies, Ira Glass, Michael Riesman, Ensemble Signal, Tim Fain, and others.

John Adams' 2003 orchestral piece My Father Knew Charles Ives will be performed by the Minnesota Orchestra led by conductor Sarah Hicks in two concerts at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis tonight and Saturday. Adams calls the piece "musical autogiography," evoking his East Coast past. The New York Times says the piece "lovingly recalls the composer's childhood home."
On a 2006 Nonesuch album, My Father Knew Charles Ives is paired with another autobiographical piece, The Dharma at Big Sur, which reflects his West Coast present.

Pianist/composer Timothy Andres has added a new show to his performance schedule for this weekend: he'll be headlining a show at 92YTribeca in New York City Saturday night, with the trio New Morse Code opening. Featured on the program is the US premiere of Martin Suckling's Lieder Ohne Worte (Songs Without Words), along with some other “wordless songs” by Schubert (Impromptu Op. 90 no. 3, Liszt’s transcription of Ständchen) and Andres (At the River, and Fast Flows the River, for which he will be joined by frequent and longtime collaborator Hannah Collins on cello).

Emmylou Harris, who recently celebrated her 20th anniversary as a member of the Grand Ole Opry, launches a mini-tour with a show each night this weekend. She performs at the Virginia Theatre in Champaign, Illinois, tonight; Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Saturday for the Ann Arbor Folk Festival; and Lexington Opera House in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday.

Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra recently began a tour of Europe in celebration of Kremer's forthcoming 65th birthday, which takes place at the end of Feburary. They are joined by pianist Martha Argerich and trumpeter Sergei Nkariakov at Salle Pleyel in Paris tonight for a program featuring works by Bach, Silvestrov, Raskatov, Desyatnikov, and more. On Sunday afternoon, Kremer and the orchestra perform at the Philharmonie in Cologne, Germany, performing an homage to Glenn Gould with works by Bach, Beethoven, Silvestrov, and more.

As noted earlier today in the Nonesuch Journal, Brad Mehldau performs an intimate solo set at the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue in Washington, DC, on Saturday. The Washington City Paper says: "His performances are wondrous, and this one promises to be no different." The Washington Post, reviewing the new Brad Mehldau Trio box set The Art of the Trio Recordings: 1996-2001, cites "an intuitive and highly interactive level of performance" in the set.

Pat Metheny and bassist Larry Grenadier conclude their week-long residency at the Blue Note in Tokyo with performances tonight and Saturday. The two close out their Japanese tour with a show in Sapporo on Monday. Metheny returns to the States in time for a talk with drama and music critic Terry Teachout at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, next week, moderated by artist-in-residence Chuck Archard.
