As part of the Lincoln Center Festival's Bruckner (R)evolution series in New York, the Cleveland Orchestra has "audaciously coupled" (New York Times) John Adams's orchestral works with four of Anton Bruckner's symphonies. The series began earlier this week, with performances of Guide to Strange Places on Wednesday and Violin Concerto, with violinist Leila Josefowicz, on Thursday. The final performance takes place this Sunday, when the orchestra performs what the New Yorker calls two "two mercurial and fascinating works": Adams's Doctor Atomic Symphony and Bruckner's final, unfinished symphony, No. 9.

Adams appeared on WNYC's Soundcheck yesterday to discuss the series. You can listen to the segment here:

Björk closes out her three-week residency at the Manchester International Festival with the last of six sold-out performances of music from Biophilia, her forthcoming Nonesuch release. She takes the stage at the Museum of Science and Industry's Campfield Market Hall in Manchester, England, Saturday night. Björk returns to the UK to perform at the Bestival on the Isle of Wight in September and begins her next Biophilia residency in her hometown of Reykjavik in October as part of the Iceland Airwaves festival.

Carolina Chocolate Drops have a full weekend ahead, beginning with their show tonight at Oneonta Theatre in Oneonta, New York, with special guests Richie Stearns and Rosie Newton. Ben Folds's US summer tour takes him to the Southwest this weekend, with a performance at The Cosmopolitan's Boulevard Pool in Las Vegas tonight and at the Rialto Theater in Tuscon, Arizona, on Saturday. He is joined each night by opener Kenton Chen, the music director of The Backbeats, former contestants on NBC's The Sing-Off, of which Folds is a judge.

Beatweek's Dana Feldman, in a preview of tonight's show, says of the songs on Folds's 2010 Nonesuch release, Lonely Avenue, featuring lyrics by Nick Hornby: "Each is intelligent, funny, heartbreaking and relatable. Accompanied with Folds’ perfect virtuosity at the piano, this album is ever-inventive alternative-rock with depth to the lyrics that are rare in pop songs." Feldman says it's "simply smart, profane, poignant, insightful prose set to impeccable music."

Tulsa Today
praises Folds's recent performance at Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa: "If you missed the show, you really missed a unique experience." Those in attendance "were treated to a one-of-kind experience that could only be brought to you by Ben Folds and company."

---

The Boston Globe's Jonathan Perry found last weekend's performance at the South Shore Music Circus "utterly riveting." He writes: "At the heart of it all, of course, was lang’s crystalline voice. Smooth as glass, sweet as nectar, and purer than most people’s intentions, the embracing instrument was equally adept at plumbing the choked emotional depths of the new 'Perfect Word,' as well as scaling the rarified peaks of 'Heaven,' the Talking Heads tune gorgeously reimagined as a blissful country hymn replete with [band member Fred] Eltringham’s brushed drums and Daniel Clark’s after-hours keyboards." American Railroad, the new album from the Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens, is out now. It is the culmination of four years of research, collaboration, and music-making, having brought Silkroad artists all across the US to uncover and uplift stories of those who built the transcontinental railroad and connecting railways across North America. "The result is a tapestry of stories, traditions, and music that have shaped our multifaceted cultural identity, and that must be heard and recognized," Giddens says. Also out now are a performance video of the track "Mahk Jchi" and the first episode of the American Railroad podcast series. The US fall tour continues to November 23.
