Joshua Redman and his trio, featuring Matt Penman on bass and Gregory Hutchinson on drums, began their four-night residency at the Jazz Standard in New York City last night and continue with multiple sets each weekend night.

New York Times music critic Nate Chinen writes of Redman's latest Noensuch release, Compass, that he "works with two bass-and-drums teams, sometimes both at once, for a result that feels rewardingly loose." Of this week's single trio shows, Chinen says, "there should still be plenty of dynamism in the exchange."

Time Out New York includes the performances among the weekend's "must-see shows," saying that "Redman is making the strongest music of his career; proof can be found on his recent Nonesuch CDs (Compass is the latest), but it’s even more evident on the bandstand."

From there, Punch Brothers head to the Lied Center in Lawrence, Kansas, for a performance on Saturday.

Back in San Francisco, Carolina Chocolate Drops are up next with a Saturday afternoon set on the Banjo Stage. The trio heads next to Petaluma, California, to perform at the Mystic Theatre with The Brothers Comatose on Sunday.

Closing out Hardly Strictly Bluegrass are Randy Newman, on the Towers of Gold Stage Sunday afternoon, and Emmylou Harris, on the Banjo Stage later that night.

American Railroad, the new album from the Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens, is out now. It is the culmination of four years of research, collaboration, and music-making, having brought Silkroad artists all across the US to uncover and uplift stories of those who built the transcontinental railroad and connecting railways across North America. "The result is a tapestry of stories, traditions, and music that have shaped our multifaceted cultural identity, and that must be heard and recognized," Giddens says. Also out now are a performance video of the track "Mahk Jchi" and the first episode of the American Railroad podcast series. The US fall tour continues to November 23.
