Soprano Julia Bullock joins the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at Zellerbach Hall in San Francisco on Sunday. The program of Baroque music features works by Handel, Vivaldi, Purcell, Bach, and more. They bring the program to Santa Barbara and New York City next week. During an earlier visit to the city, Bullock stopped by the Nonesuch office for the Nonesuch Selects video series to share some of her favorite albums from the music library. She chose recordings by Gipsy Kings, k.d. lang, Jan DeGaetani, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Dawn Upshaw, Sanford Sylvan, Caetano Veloso, and John Adams. You can watch it here.

Composer John Adams’s new piano concerto After the Fall was given its world premiere performance by the San Francisco Symphony and pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, conducted by David Robertson, at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco last night, with additional performances there on Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile, in the UK, Adams’s 2002 piece On the Transmigration of Souls is performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Saturday.

---

Pianist Jeremy Denk performs a solo show at Union College’s Memorial Chapel in Schenectady, New York, on Sunday. The program features music by women composers from Clara Schumann to Meredith Monk, as well as works by Brahms and Robert Schumann. Denk’s new album, Ives Denk, includes Ives’s four violin sonatas, performed with violinist Stefan Jackiw, and a remastered recording of Denk performing the composer’s first and second piano sonatas. “An album of Ives music, especially one as well played and thought provoking as Ives Denk, is worth engaging with at any time,” NPR says.

---

Gabriel Kahane performs a solo concert at Michigan State University’s Jackson Lounge in East Lansing on Saturday. Kahane’s recently posted Nonesuch Selects video includes recordings by Ambrose Akinmusire, Punch Brothers, Sam Amidon, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Richard Goode & Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Fred Hersch, and his father, Jeffrey Kahane. You can watch it here.

---

Pianist Brad Mehldau sits in with Al Foster and his quartet—saxophonist Chris Potter and bassist Joe Martin— for the drummer’s five-night birthday celebration residency at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club in New York City through the weekend, with early and late sets tonight, Saturday, and Sunday.
