What better season than this to hear John Adams's 1999 nativity oratorio, El Niño? The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, led by David Robertson, performs the piece in its entirety both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at Powell Hall in St. Louis. Soprano Jessica Rivera, a featured artists on the Nonesuch recording of Adams's latest opera, A Flowering Tree, performs the piece along with mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor; bass-barritone Jonathan Lemalu; countertenors Steven Rickards, Daniel Bubeck, adn Brian Cummings; the Saint Louis Symphony Chorus; and the St. Louis Children's Choirs, led by Barbara Berner.

David Byrne's Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno tour continues at the Tampa Theatre in Tampa, Florida, tonight, then heads down east to play the Filmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater.
After Monday's show in Raleigh, North Carolina, the News Observer exclaimed that Byrne and his cohorts spent the night "serving up an extraordinary performance ... [T]he confidence of age and experience suits Byrne perfectly." The Charleston City Paper describes the show's stop at the North Charleston Performing Art Center on Tuesday as "a groove-heavy musical trip" that proved that "Bryne hasn't lost a step." The Charleston Post & Courier says Byrne "treated a sold-out audience to a spectacular show."

Elliott Carter's 100th birthday celebration continues all weekend and around the world after yesterday's birthday-night concert at Carnegie Hall by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mandy Patinkin continues his two-week residency at The Public Theater in New York City, where he first performed 20 years ago. Tonight he'll perform songs from Mamaloshen, his 1998 Nonesuch release of traditional, classic, and contemporary songs sung entirely in Yiddish. Tomorrow night, it's Dress Casual, featuring the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Harry Chapin, and others. The series' third program, Celebrating Sondheim, continues on Monday.
