Clarinetist/composer Don Byron continues the four-night musical celebration of his 50th birthday that began last night at New York's Jazz Standard with Don Byron Plays the Music of Mickey Katz, featuring works from his 1993 Nonesuch album of the same name. Tonight's three performances showcase music from Byron's classic 1996 release Bug Music, with works by Duke Ellington, Raymond Scott, and John Kirby. On Saturday, the Don Byron Quartet takes the stage, and closing out the celebration on Sunday, Byron returns to his Nonesuch catalog and his Latin-focused 1995 recording, Music for Six Musicians. John Adams's 2007 piece Fellow Traveler, which Kronos Quartet premiered at another 50th birthday celebration, that of director Peter Sellars, will be on the Quartet's program at Santa Fe's Lensic Performing Arts Center Saturday night. The program also includes Stephen Prutsman's arrangement for Kronos of Sigur Rós's Flugufrelsarinn plus Hamza El Din's Escalay (The Water Wheel), which Hamza himself recorded for the Nonesuch Explorer Series.

The Black Keys continue their tour of the UK with Liam Finn, playing the second of a number of Carling Academy shows tonight at the Carling Academy Newcastle in Newcastle Upon Tyne, after last night's show in Sheffield. On Sunday, the tour heads up to Edinburgh, Scotland, for a night at Queens Hall.

Shawn Colvin is in the New York area again tonight after last night's show at Tarrytown Music Hall. She'll head out to Long Island this evening for a performance at the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore. She's been slated to join label mate Emmylou Harris along with Patty Griffin and Buddy Miler for a return to last year's successful Three Girls and Their Buddy tour in February.

Toumani Diabaté concludes his fall tour of the United States with a concert tonight at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. Time Out Chicago calls Toumani's latest release, The Mandé Variations, his first solo album in two decades, "exquisite," and the Chicago Tribune says the new album from this "legend from Mali ... affirms that he's only gotten better and bolder" over the years.

Bill Frisell rounds out his European Trio tour with Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen, playing music to the films of Buster Keaton, Bill Morrison, and Jim Woodring, tonight at the Lantaren Venster in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and tomorrow night at the Barbican in London. On Sunday, he'll join drummer Joey Baron for a performance at Germany's Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonn.

k.d. lang closes out the latest leg of her Watershed tour with a performance Saturday night at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, California. Later on this month, she'll play at a special concert to benefit Ari Bhöd, the American Foundation for Tibetan Cultural Preservation, at the Long Beach Terrace Theater.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recommends the Brad Mehldau Trio's performance tonight at Spivey Hall at Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia, stating, "The word jazz seems inadequate in describing the work of this bold, questing pianist, who has crafted remarkable reimaginings of Radiohead, Thelonius Monk and Nick Drake." Tomorrow night, the Trio plays another set at a Georgia school, this time at North Georgia College & State University's Hoag Auditorium in Dahlonega. It's the last scheduled trio show for some time. On Sunday, Brad plays a solo set when he joins the McCoy Tyner Trio and the Ellis Marsalis Quintet for the Greek Theatre's final concert of the season.

The Nicholas Payton Quintet—Vicente Archer (bass), Marcus Gilmore (drums), Daniel Sadownik(percussion) and Robert Glasper (acoustic & electric piano)—heads to the port of Miami this weekend, where they'll ship off on the eighth annual, seven-night cruise Jazz Party at Sea. They'll play multiple sets over the course of the cruise as the ship makes its way through the beautiful Caribbean islands.

With his Trio tour completed, Joshua Redman joins the Orquestra de Jazz de Matosinhos Saturday night at the Teatro Constantino Nery in Matosinhos, Portugal. Also on the bill are fellow tenor sax players Chris Cheek and Mark Turner. Redman's next trio dates are scheduled for January, when his forthcoming trio album, Compass, is due out on Nonesuch.

Allen Toussaint, who appeared on the 2005 Nonesuch album Our New Orleans and whose solo Nonesuch debut is due out in early 2009, closes out his November tour with two concerts in Virginia this weekend. Tonight, he plays the Jefferson Center in Roanoake, and tomorrow night, he's at the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville. He has more dates already scheduled for early next year.

Dawn Upshaw returns to the Peter Sellars-directed production of György Kurtág's Kafka Fragments tonight at Lincoln Center's Gerald W. Lynch Theater in New York City. Upshaw first brought the piece to Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in 2005 with violinist Geoff Nuttall, who returns for tonight's concert and for upcoming performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and Zellerbach Playhouse in Berkeley.
