Glenn Kotche takes part in the day-long Bang on a Can Marathon taking place at the University of Illinois's Krannert Center in Urbana. He joins percussionist David Cossin at the Colwell Playhouse Saturday afternoon for Glenn's variations on Steve Reich's Clapping Music and for Cossin's arrangement for drums of Reich's Music for Pieces of Wood. He'll then join the Bang on a Can All-Stars for a performance of his own pieces Snap and Mobile. The day's program also includes music by Brian Eno, Michael Gordon, Evan Ziporyn, Lee Ranaldo, and Louis Andriessen, as well as Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint. John Adams's oft-performed Short Ride in a Fast Machine, one of his Two Fanfares for Orchestra, will receive two performances this weekend by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, led by Manfred Honeck, at its home venue of Heinz Hall, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Also on the program, Joshua Bell will perform Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto.

Coincidentally, the first of those two fanfares, Tromba Lontana, will also be played Saturday night, though several hundred miles away, by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Christopher Wilkins, in its hometown's Bob Carr Performing Arts Center. (That program also includes a piece by Tchaikovsky: his Capriccio italien, op. 45.)

The Black Keys settle in to life in Texas for the next few days, taking their tour with supporting artist Jessica Lea Mayfield to the Lone Star State. First up is a sold-out show at the Granada Theatre in Dallas tonight. For the rest of the weekend, the Keys hit Austin for the big Austin City Limits festival, with a show at Zilker Park Saturday night and another, this time with the Black Angels, at Stubb's BBQ Sunday. The Texas trip ends in Houston next week.

David Byrne is also in Texas for Austin City Limits. He's on tour with songs from various stages in his career that came from collaborations with Brian Eno, including Talking Heads albums and their pairing on My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. He gave Austinites a special Thursday night set at the Paramount before the ACL crowd came in and can see him at Zilker Park tonight. On Sunday, he'll take the Byrne/Eno songs to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for a show at Kiva Auditorium.

Ry Cooder makes a very rare concert appearance when he joins East L.A. singer Ersi Arvizu, whose new record he recently produced, and her All Star Big Band for this weekend's San Jose Mariachi Festival. The group performs tonight at the Montgomery Theater in San Jose.

Shawn Colvin has a number of upcoming dates on her performance schedule over the next coming months. Tonight she is in Clayton, North Carolina, near Raleigh, to play the Clayton Center.

Bill Frisell participates in a sold-out benefit concert for RE-Sources, a non-profit environmental education organization, at the Church House in Bellingham, Washington, tonight. On Saturday, he'll stay in the state to play a solo set for Orcas Islanders at the Orcas Theatre in Eastsound.

Emmylou Harris concludes her European tour this weekend with two stops in the Netherlands. Tonight, she'll play the Cultureel Centrum de Osterpoort in Groningen, before heading to Amsterdam, where she'll play the tour's closing show at the Carre Saturday night.

Kronos Quartet is in London this weekend for what promises to be a whirlwind of events at the Barbican: both its Open Weekend and Ramadan Nights, its annual festival of Muslim music. Kronos performs tonight with the man who has been called Azerbaijan's greatest singer, Alim Qasimov, and his ensemble, including his daughter, Fergana. The Times (UK) calls the power of their vocals "devastating" and quotes Kronos's David Harrington as placing Alim Qasimov "up there in the top five of all time" among the world's greatest singers. Randy Newman continues his Harps and Angels tour with three consecutive East Coast shows this weekend. Tonight he's in Glenside, Pennsylvania, to perform at the Keswick Theatre; Saturday he plays the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey; and Sunday, he heads up to Northampton, Massachusetts, to play the Calvin.

In addition to the inclusion of a number of Steve Reich pieces in the aforementioned Bang on a Can Marathon at the University of Illinois, the composer's work is featured in a string of performances across Europe of choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's Steve Reich Evening. Her dance company Rosas, accompanied by the ensemble Ictus, will perform the piece, set to music by Reich, tonight at the Stadsschouwburg in Kortrijk, Belgium. The next performances are on Monday and Tuesday at Sadler's Wells in London.

Also across the globe this weekend, Reich's Vermont Counterpoint will be performed by flutist Teruki Ishibashi at Muramatsu Recital Hall, in Osaka, Japan; and his New York Counterpoint will be played by clarinetist Elisabeth Stimpert at the Kutztown University Georgian Room in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.

As reported earlier, Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer, who began their monthlong tour in support of their new album last night in Denver, head to California this weekend, with stops in Irvine's Barclay Theatre Saturday night and San Diego's Balboa Theatre the next. The San Diego Union-Tribune said: "Their fusion of classical and bluegrass, the earthy and the sophisticated, is so seamless and evolved that it seems unlikely anyone will catch up soon."
