Devendra Banhart brings music from his new album, Ma, to Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California, tonight, for Ohana festival. He embarks on a twenty-four city North American tour, in support of the new album, beginning October 15 in Ventura, California.
Ma, released earlier this month, is “sublimely understated, border-blurring folk rock,” writes the Los Angeles Times. “Banhart's singular world remains as intoxicating as ever on the earthly, analogue-sounding Ma,” says Q in its four-star review. “It feels as if all of human life is here.”

Composer John Adams conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra and violinist Leila Josefowicz in his own Scheherazade.2 at Verizon Hall in Philadelphia this afternoon and Saturday. The program also includes Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso and Stravinsky’s Song of the Nightingale. On Saturday morning, Adams rehearses works for the Orchestra’s BeethovenNOW celebration in collaboration with Composer-in-Residence Gabriela Lena Frank and composers from her Creative Academy of Music.
Nonesuch released the first recording of Scheherazade.2, performed by Josefowicz and the St. Louis Symphony led by David Robertson, in 2017. The “cinematic music goes a long way in unfolding a potent drama,” says NPR. “The fierceness and vulnerability Leila Josefowicz expresses contributes to an award-caliber performance.”

The Black Keys continue their "Let's Rock" tour at United Center in Chicago tonight and Target Center in Minneapolis on Saturday. “From top to bottom, the 12-track 'Let’s Rock' holds tight to captivating instrumentation, with guitar at the center,” says the Associated Press of the band’s new album. “The Black Keys are rock royalty and to the relief of many, they aren’t quite ready to relinquish their reign.”

Pianist Jeremy Denk gives a solo recital at Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland, on Sunday, performing works by Bach, Ligeti, Liszt, Berg, and Schumann. His new album, c. 1300–c. 2000, which includes works by Bach, Schumann, and many others, is “a thoughtfully curated, beautifully played, brilliantly annotated recital,” raves BBC Radio 3’s Record Review. He performed Ligeti’s Études on his 2012 Nonesuch debut album, Ligeti/Beethoven.
